Hello! My name is Brittni. Yes, you read it correctly and I didn’t misspell my name. It’s Brittni with a N-I. It’s unique, I know. I’ve heard that my entire life. Growing up I didn’t think my name was so unique. Never, ever would I have imagined the unique obstacles I would overcome in life. Of course we all are unique and have overcome things in life. I don’t believe my obstacles have been any worst than any other human being on this planet. However, these obstacles are unique because these things just weren’t suppose to happen to ME! I’m sure every has thought that as well. But just hear me out…..
Nov. 7th 2012 my mother answered her phone with a false sense of surprise in her voice. She was expecting to hear, “Happy Birthday”. Instead she heard the inaudible voice, of her 25 year old daughter saying “Mom, I have breast cancer”. Unable to understand the voice, because it was drowned out by the sounds of weeping, she asked, “huh”. The voice repeated ” I have breast cancer”. My mother was stunned! What 25 year old with no family history of breast cancer be diagnosed with breast cancer?
The answer to that would be ME!! Well now I’m 33 and cancer free. However, the journey from then until now has presented several unique lessons and blessings. I’ve had not 1 but 2 children, after being told I may not be able to due to the chemotherapy!
Ironically, I’m a registered nurse. My experience as a healthcare professional and healthcare consumer changed my view of the healthcare systems completely! The are limitless gaps in our healthcare systems! My goal is to use this platform to give others the knowledge, tools and resources to help close their own gaps. I will do this by sharing my personal experiences and life lessons.
Some lessons I’ve learned and will write about include, a cancer diagnosis health insurance is complicated AF, cannabis actually can be used therapeutically, mental illness is still way too stigmatized, Autism spectrum disorder doesn’t determine one’s intelligence (verbal and/or non-verbal) and many other topics and lessons.
I believe God had me learn some lessons the hard way so I can teach others a better way. My life’s purpose is helping others! Sharing my experiences helps me to reflect and grow; while fulfilling my purpose.
